FB (EmildePhils): Prehispanic Tattooing by EJAdelPilarPhils FB (EmildePhils): Prehispanic Tattooing by EJAdelPilarPhils
Nearly 500 years ago the Philippines, the 7,107 island archipelago that lies between mainland Asia and the great Pacific Ocean, was known by another name.

The conquistadors who claimed the island nation declared it “the Philippines” in honor of their Spanish king, but amongst those who had traveled to this beautiful and exotic land, it was known as “La Isla de Los Pintados” (Island of the Painted Ones) after the peculiar practice the locals had of adorning themselves—their entire bodies laced with intricate designs embedded into their skin.

To the locals, these markings were an outward symbol of status, beauty, family, and pride.

They represented an individual’s personal journey and accomplishments, a public testimony inscribed onto their flesh recounting acts of combat, bravery, and strength.

The more tattooed the warrior, the more revered.

(( Alright so those familiar of the history, might wonder, why does this guy have a lot of mix-ups?

Headcannons:

1. This is the Philippines [before colonized] and his name was "Bayani" [aka Hero, ahue //slapped] *((Thank you to Maharlika / Bagwis Kidlat Dakila (Hetalia: Axis Powers OC) for the name ;w;))

2. Although the [Prehispanic] Philippines was composed of a lot of tribes separated with their own ways, pretty much, regionalistic or ''island-nistic'', I thought that there was already a united representative that was only felt by the people but not identified, I thought that the "Filipino" people only knew the united country after the several colonizations that took place.

3. Bayani [Prehispanic Philippines] was already almost around his teens [looks about 12-14 years old] before Spain came. The reason we have for this is because, the Prehispanic times was already pretty advance even before the Spanish came. They weren't really barbaric nor were they savages; why they already had a working government, rules, laws, weaponry, way of living, trades with other countries that reached as far as in the Middle East, beliefs and religions, and etc. Something like that.

4. If you have noticed, the tattoos are mixed up. Bayani's head possesses the tattoos of the Kalinga [Luzon]. His abdomen possesses the tattoos of the Pintados [Visayas]. His gold is from the riches of the Land of Promise [Mindanao]. He also has tattoos on his legs [like from the Banwa-on tribe of Mindanao] but I ran out of space OTL for the leggies. ((Sincere apologies)).

5. We tried to be as accurate as possible, with regards to the meanings as we used a lot of trusted sources around the world web wide so, ^^; Please bear with us, and if you got confusions or things you'd like to clear up with, please feel free to politely ask us. ;w;b

6. Also, some of the tattoos are inspired from several sources and a few others were designed by us but with regards to how they are to be designed according to the ones we've seen in the sources themselves. ;w;//

OMG the details are soooo beautiful, I learned so much from your art.
I've often seen Pintados tattoos but never really understood what they meant. Your picture taught me about all these tattoos symbols meaning, bless you!
totally fav this pic till the end of the world X333333
If you don't mind, may I use the description on the picture info for my notes of Precolonial Philippines? I would like to incorporate these in my comic for a Pintados character from Visayas.
It would means so much to me if you permit me ;w; salamat!

the more tattoos you have the braver you are-men in pre-colonial
the more tattoos you have the prettier you are-women in pre-colonial

we tackled this lesson about Philippine culture since I'm studying Philippine tourism back then and Philippine History now, they also use color coding for status and symbol example, the 'Datu' or chief would  wear a red kangan (Jacket) and the subordinates would wear a blue or black Kangan, for their head men has this "Putong" it doesn't represent ranking but it represent how many men you have killed a red means you have killed a man while a red putong with embroidery means he had killed at least 7 men
